Taking Charge of the Moment

If much of what you’ve read in the previous paragraph feels true, if the food on your plate now looks appealing but not compellingly attractive and your previous feelings of hunger have been satiated, tune in to this change. It signals that you may be approaching an all-important moment. You’ve loved your food, liked your food, and, yes, now it’s time to leave your food. You’re at a 5, perfectly satisfied. You need no more, and—best of all—you know it!

Allow yourself another bite or two. Then acknowledge that you’ve just become full and that it’s time to stop eating. (You may opt, however, to order some coffee or tea to sip as you spend some additional time relaxing and chatting with your companion.)

What does the experience at this point feel like for you? Yes, it’s truly momentous and you’ll have to be fully aware of it, even embrace it, if you’re going to take charge of your eating, your weight, and, to some degree, your life. But watch for some of these emotions you may be experiencing at the end of your meal.

Sadness. This and a sense of loss are feelings many clients have reported and which at this point in a meal I’ve experienced myself. There’s a sense of mourning the past pleasures of the eating experience coupled with worry that the pleasures to follow during that day or evening won’t compare to those that have transpired.
